The Ratio of omega-6/omega-3 Matters

Humans evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids of around 1. This is a huge contrast compared to the western diets of today. Now the ratio is more like 15/1-16.7/1. Diets are now deficient in omega-3 fatty acids according to a report published by The Center for Genetics. Furthermore, modern western diets have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. This is extremely high compared to the diet on which human life evolved and genetic patterns were formed. This is important because the extreme imbalance is detrimental to human health and wellbeing.

The report suggests that a lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids helps to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases that are so widespread in western societies.

The solution to the problem is simple: increase omega-3 fatty acids into the diet while reducing omega-6s to redress the imbalance. The difficulty is getting the message out and people taking positive action.
