Fish Oil Could Prevent AAA Induced by Hypoperfusion

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious vascular disease.  It's an aneurysm (swelling) of the aorta (main blood-vessel leading away from our heart muscle, down through your belly through to the rest of the body).  AAA is histologically epitomized by:

  • Oxidative stress
  • Chronic (long lasting) inflammation
  • Extracellular matrix degradation in the vascular wall

Preventative methods for hypoperfusion (shock)-induced AAA are still unknown. Scientists evaluated the effect that fish oil (FO) had on AAA development. In this trial they used a hypoperfusion-induced AAA animal model. The animals were divided into two groups: FO administered group and control group. The findings were as follows: dilation of the abdominal aorta in the FO-administration group was smaller than it was in the control group. Collagen destruction along with oxidative-stress was suppressed in the FO-administration group. These results go some way to suggested that FO might help to prevent the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm induced by hypoperfusion.
