In the video below, Dr. Oz talks on the health benefits of quality krill oil supplements

Not all Krill Oil Supplements Are Equal

It's important to note that not all krill oil supplements are equal and it’s crucial to be mindful of this fact. The quality of supplements available today ranges from superior to substandard. There are quite a number of products on the market that are low quality.  You must ensure that you get value for your money and a product that actually delivers on its promise. The three things to look out for are:

  1. Molecular distillation
  2. Omega-3 content
  3. Sustainable harvesting

OK, let's take a look at each of these in turn, starting with the molecular distillation of krill oil.

Molecular Distillation

Molecular distillation is a decontamination procedure. It's a process that gets rid of the final trace elements, toxins and any heavy metals from the krill oil. It is done before the oil gets put into capsules to ensure maximum purity. Any krill oil that has not undergone molecular distillation will not be of the highest quality. That means it could contain contaminants and traces of heavy metals. The long term digestion of low quality krill oil can be detrimental to your medium and long term health, and may even cause disease.

Sustainable Harvesting

Anyone who cares about the planet will want to make sure their krill oil products derive from sustainable harvesting practices. Humans are overfishing the planet's oceans but you can make a difference. You do this by selecting a quality brand that complies with sustainable harvesting traditions. Check the labels for “Friend of The Sea” certification or other indicators.

Omega-3 content

Most of you thinking about krill oil supplements will be looking to increase your omega-3 intake, but take heed. Again, not all supplements are equal, meaning they're cheap for a reason. There really can be a huge variation in the omega-3 levels between brands.  A quality krill oil supplement will be more potent and therefore contain more omega-3. This is why you need to become familiar with the labeling. Look for a product that has at least 300mg of combined DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) + EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) per capsule. These are the two main types of omega-3 fatty acids needed by your body for many its functions.
